RC - Patras, Renovation of plant protection institute of Patras

Short description:

The Plant Protection Institute of Patras (PPIP), which belongs to the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF), was established in1924. It practices thorough research to produce important scientific knowledge which supports the local agricultural economy. Over the years, the PPIP has highly contributed to the agricultural production and economy of Western Greece. The Institute is located in the east side of Patras, in a rather densely populated area and is considered to be an oasis of nature amongst the surrounding buildings.

During the past years various local governmental authorities and organizations have made clear the intention of altering the use of the land that the PPIP uses, which initiated intensive debates. A part of the 0,3 hectares, that surround the building as well as the greenhouse of the Institute, are being claimed to host other local services, such as the Courthouse. This prospect would undoubtedly diminish the green space therefore degrade the living standard of the area.

In an effort to amplify the significance of the Institute locally and widely, the Region of Western Greece, decided and financed the renewal of the building and its equipment. This task involved the static improvement of the building, the internal spacing rearrangement, the renewal of the underground spaces and finally the instalment of new computing and air-conditioning facilities.
