THE CASE STUDY "FISHERMAN ISLAND" AND “CHINESE QUARTER” OF NOVI SAD
Fisherman Island- Chinese quarter (243 ha)
The case study area is located at the Danube and comprises an old industrial area of Novi Sad and the Fisherman Island (recreational zone).
In recent years, the old industrial zone, known as Chinese quarter because Chinese shop owners in 1990s used the old sheds as store houses, is being transformed to artistic and night industry area.
The Chinese quarter is located in between a park and the Danube, and in vicinity of the biggest housing area in Novi Sad (Liman) with some 55.000 inhabitants.
Land and buildings are owned by the city council.
On the western part of the quarter a military (river) marines base is placed (in the process of being exchanged for the other location within the city boundaries).
The Fisherman Island is a green (forest) area planned for recreation, camping site and free time zone.

- what would be benefit for the city in terms of spatial development?
- what kind of functions may become new attractions for developers and city residents?
- what and where should new structures be build in order to provide best possible access to the site?
- how will redevelopment of the area influence the society in terms of sociological, economic and cultural aspects?
- how to make the most out of the river, in terms of water sports, recreational facilities, leisure, etc.?
A complete case study dossier is being prepared. The dossier and relevant maps will be put on the website of the International Intervision Institute (www.iiinstitute.nl ) and the website of DonauHanse (www.donauhanse.net) and can be downloaded, as soon as they have become available.

REQUEST 1
The participation form with all the relevant information about the recommended hotels will be downloadable on the iii website by the end of January 2012 and should be filled in and submitted before 1st of March 2012.
In this invitation we focus on the programme itself in more detail and on some remaining issues that have to be in place to make sure the Novi Sad Implementation Lab will run smoothly.
Most important in this respect are the reference cases that participants are invited to present on the first day of the workshop. The idea is to present cases that bear relevance to the Novi Sad Fishermans Island / Chinese quarter case study area development, where multifunctional development concepts play a role and as before planning processes involving different stakeholders are problems that have to be dealt with.
REQUEST 2
Every participants is invited to present in 10 power point sheets, a case from their own city or region regarding the ways your city or region prepares multifunctional area developments These experiences could be helpful as input for the brainstorm workshop on the second day.
REQUEST 3
Every participant is requested to (preferably) send in or else bring in hard copy an updated short CV.
We are looking forward working with you on the interesting case that the City of Novi Sad has brought up for the fourth CUPA Implementation Lab Workshop, and expect the submiitence of your participation form shortly.
We are looking forward meeting you in Novi Sad.
Kind regards
On behalf of Tina Vienna and the Donauhanse league and the City of Vienna
